Career Development: Mapping The Road To Success

One thing humanity shares --apart from the obvious and distinctly similar biological traits we all share- is a resolve and determination to achieve. Be it our ancestral cavemen learning how to hunt with clubs, bows and arrow, or later ages of scientific discovery when the truth behind the cosmos and nature was revealed, the fact remains. We all aspire, endeavor and challenge ourselves to attain one or another life goal, it is just the way of life. Today we speak of career development when referring to the means to reach the highest level of career success. Career fairs, conventions, seminars, workshops, college initiatives and a host of other platforms exist to help people become who have always dreamt of becoming.

Career Development Centers At Colleges And Universities

Most colleges and universities run Career Development Centers to assist students in their career choices. Taking different forms, from student counselling to proper career centers, they all focus on one thing: putting you on the right career path and ensuring that you benefit the most from your inert potential. From experience, a lot of students get caught up in degree programs that have nothing to do with their life goals. People wonder why they are not happy in later years of life and do not even know that it could be because they chose the wrong careers. So in order to prevent this catastrophe, universities and colleges a driven to nip the problem in the bud, even if it means that a student eventually has to switch degrees after years of study. When you really look at it, it is better to waste 3 years in college than to endure a lifetime of regret.

Career Fairs

Then you have independent career consultants who host annual or quarterly career fairs for students in high school. Nothing better than to 'catch them young' so to speak. However, to refer to career consultants is actually misleading. The reality is that career fairs are hosted by real professionals in their different fields of specialization. So the doctors, lawyers, psychologists, policemen, accountants, engineers and architects you talk to are real professionals. So hey, these are people who have 'been there and done that', so what better place to learn than from the horse's mouth right? Speaking face to face with someone who knows a particular industry well is the best learn to know about the expectations, demands and pressures of the career you choose to pursue. Look No Further.....

Look around you and ask yourself if there is anyone in your family who has achieved what you already dream of becoming. Many a time we search in all the wrong places when what we want is right before our eyes. The perfect role model is someone you look up to, someone you knew growing up and who you idolized. The awesome thing about this is that such a family member or friend can give you advice that is genuine and not just a regurgitated sales pitch meant to recruit and not guide.

Career development is important if you want to know what the right career choice is. Rather than enduring a lifetime of regret, take all the time you need --but not forever- but knowing for certain that you will be happy for the rest of your life.
